ELDERUPDATES.COM, NO. 49

ELDERUPDATES.COM, No. 49 November 26, 2014   FIRST AND FOREMOST, HAPPY THANKSGIVING.  JOHN BOEHNER, SPEAKER of the House of Representatives chooses to keep his “expensive” Obamacare plan when he turns 65, instead of going on Medicare.  The Speaker pays $449 a month for his coverage.  (Politico Pro, November 18, 2014.) MEANWHILE, even though the House has voted over 40 times to repeal Obamacare in full, House Republicans sued the Obama Administration, alleging that in delaying the requirement employers provide health coverage for their workers President Obama exceeded his authority.  (AP, November 21, 2014.) PRESIDENT OBAMA announced he will take actions to allow foreign college students to remain in the U.S. after graduation and to defer prosecution of illegal immigrants who have children who are American citizens.  These changes, affecting an estimated 4.7 million, end when the President leaves office.  (Reuters and Los Angeles Times, November 21, 2014.) AVOID GIFT CARD FRAUD this holiday season by: Checking any card before you buy it to make sure it has not been tampered with in any way; Don’t buy gift cards from people or companies you don’t know (such as online individuals); Register the gift card if that is possible; and Use the card sooner, rather than later. (U.S. News, on AOL, November 19, 2014.) REVERSE MORTGAGES are getting harder to get as the FHA requires borrowers to undergo a “financial assessment” as if they were getting a purchase mortgage, documenting payment histories, credit, household obligations and income.  (Los Angeles Times, November 23, 2014.)  SMOKING MARIJUANA has more significant impact on developing brains than previously thought.  A small study showed long-term smokers experience...

ZIMRING   CLIENT UPDATE – NOVEMBER, 2014          TO RECEIVE MY BLOG  (ON MATTERS I OF INTEREST TO MY CLIENTS),  EMAIL ME AT BJSHEPPARD@AOL.COM WITH THE WORD “SUBSCRIBE” IN THE SUBJECT LINE.          The year had many articles on poor management at the Veterans Administration, long waits for appointments, and, most unfortunately, the abuse of disability benefits.  These shortcomings interfere with the VA’s ability to provide for those truly injured in their service to our country.   Social Security payments are scheduled to go up 1.8% in January, while Medicare premiums for part B will stay at $104.90 per month is 2015.   More insurance companies now pay for “end of life talks” for those with terminal illness.  And the Obama Administration will require HMOs to pay for care outside of the network when the network cannot provide adequate care.   Delaying social security benefits until 70 enables you to collect 8% for each year you wait and for the increases that occur while you are waiting.   46 people die every day from painkiller overdoses.   Gay marriage is now legal in 35 states.   A Roth 401k, which requires regular distributions when you reach 70 1/2.   President Obama has a first, an agreement with China under which both countries will reduce long-term emissions by a specific date.   Books: Two informative works I read this year are “Average...

ELDERUPDATES.COM, NO. 48 November 19, 2014   THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FOR DUMMIES book, by AARP, will be published November 15, 2014, for those who want a hands on guide to the Act (I have no connection to AARP other than being a member). SUPREME COURT to hear challenge to Affordable Care Act’s payments to enrollees from federal funds, since law specifically stated payments were to be from “health exchanges established by the state”.  Petitioners allege subsidy payments from the federal government are against the law.  (The WEEK, November 21, 2014.) NPR reports Covered California (Obamacare), enrollments for next year are running much more smoothly than last year.  (NPR, November 18, 2014.) MEDICARE proposes to pay for lung cancer screening for long term smokers.  The proposal is open for comment for 30 days.  Under the Affordable Care Act, private providers must provide this coverage.  (New York Times, November 10, 2014.) IN 2013 the number of Medicare fraud charges filed by the government reached a record number.  Medicare fraud is particularly prevalent in Miami, Florida.  (AARP Magazine, November, 2014.) PERHAPS 600,000 eligible Latinos are not signing up for Obamacare because members of their families are here illegally and they don’t want to draw attention to their parents’ immigration status.  (Los Angeles Times, November 10, 2014.) NPR (National Public Radio) reports that President Obama is considering an Executive Order which would allow up to 5 million people in the country illegally to stay and also to obtain green cards (even though NPR reports that most already work).  (NPR, November 14, 2014.)  NET NEUTRAILITY, which ensures all equal access to websites and...

ELDERUPTDATES.COM, NO. 47

ELDERUPDATES.COM, NO. 47 November 11, 2014   THERE HAVE BEEN TECHNICAL PROBLEMS WITH THE BLOG AND I APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.   THE VETERAN’S ADMINISTRATION has a new director from the private sector and is reorganizing and restaffing itself.  Their plan is to hire 28,000 new doctors, fire 1,000 workers involved in fraud or other actions that hurt veteran care, and generally reorganize the whole system.  (Various, including 60 Minutes.) THIS VETERAN’S DAY we should remember that Veteran’s Day was initially Armistice Day, and dated the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month because that is when the Germans signed the surrender terms for WWI.  The terms were so ungenerous, however, they contributed to WWII for the next generation.  Not all veterans may be happy about the wars they fought in, but if you can, take the time to acknowledge them for their service.  When their country called, they stepped forward. NEW INTERNATIONAL Autism study has found “22 genes that convey a high risk of autism”, quadrupling the previous number of high risk genes to more than 30.  (Nature, November 2014, quoted in Autism Speaks, November 6, 2014.) MEDICARE spending is projected to grow more slowly in the future as a result of shorter hospital stays and fewer readmissions after discharge, both tenets of the Affordable Care Act.  77 new insurers will offer plans in 44 states in 2015, while 14 insurers are dropping out of the program.  (AARP Magazine, November, 2014.) ALTHOUGH funding was rejected in the Affordable Care Act for “death panels”, more insurance companies are paying for “End-of-Life Talks”, and Medicare will decide...
